Vita Genomics
has a strong management team including:
Ellson Chen, Ph. D., President and Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Chen was the Principal Scientist and
Director of cDNA program at the Celera Genomics Group
of PE Corp. He also served as a director for PE-owned
Shanghai GeneCore Biotech Inc. Dr. Chen is a renowned
scientist in the field of large-scale DNA sequencing
and human genomics. Prior to join PE Corp., Dr. Chen
was a senior scientist and scientific manager at Genentech,
Inc. from 1980 to 1992, and Dr. Chen served in several
advisory committees for both the National Institutes
of Health and the Department of Energy. Moreover, Dr.
Chen also organized a number of DNA sequencing workshops
and genomics conferences, and he has been a member of
the editorial board of major journals, including DNA
Sequence, Genome Research and GENE. Dr. Chen received
his Ph. D. in chemistry and biochemistry from the Kent
State University. Dr. Chen completed his post-doctoral
training with Dr. Bruce Roe at Kent State University
and Dr. Fred Sanger (a Nobel laureate) at the Medical
Research Council in U.K.
Eugene Lin, Ph. D., Director, Bioinformatics and Information Technology
Dr. Lin is currently Director of Bioinformatics and Information Technology
at Vita Genomics, which he joined in 2001 at its founding. He oversees the
development of information technology and manages the Bioinformatics department.
His research interests are in the areas of bioinformatics, pharmacogenomics, genomics,
artificial intelligence, microarray gene expression analysis, medical statistics,
medical informatics, data mining, and computational biology.
He mainly conducts research in the areas of translational genomics and pharmacogenomics
to determine the contribution of genes to disease susceptibility or drug efficacy
using candidate-gene approaches, genome-wide association studies, and genome-wide sequencing.
In addition, his research focuses on developing molecular diagnosis tools for chronic hepatitis C
(interferon) therapy, anti-obesity sibutramine therapy, and antidepressant responsiveness.
Moreover, he investigates bioinformatics and medical informatics techniques to identify
disease genes in a wide variety of human diseases, such as geriatric depression,
diabetic nephropathy, and chronic fatigue syndrome.
Dr. Lin also serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor of
Graduate Institute of Clinical Medical Science at China Medical University.
He is a member of the honorary editorial board for
the following journals: American Journal of Translational Research, Open Access Bioinformatics, Advances and Applications in Bioinformatics and Chemistry,
Pharmacology & Pharmacy, Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine.
He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington.
Yuchi Hwang, Ph. D., Director, Business Development
Dr. Hwang majors in Molecular Biology and Virology with experience in
several fields including research in hepatitis B, bacterial expression and purification
system, peptide drug screening, pharmacogenomics studies in chronic hepatitis C and
depression, product development of genetic testing kits. The research works of Dr. Hwang
have been presented in 20 international/local conferences and published in 9 scientific
journals in the past 5 years. In addition, she issued patents in 8 files to US; TW and CN,
3 of them have been approved. She also experienced in GMP applications in Taiwan.
Dr. Hwang received her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology form National Yang-Ming University,
Taiwan in 1998. Post-doctoral training was completed with Dr. MS Shiao who majors in lipid
metabolism in Department of Medical Research and Education Veterans General Hospital-Taipei, Taiwan.
Hua-Mei Chang, Ph. D., Director, Core Technology Center
Dr. Chang is Director of Core Technology Center, which division is also running
contract service business with clients from academic institutions and Pharma/ Biotech industries.
She was the former manager (1997-1999) of Joint VGH-YM Human Genome sequencing team in Taiwan.
Dr. Chang was responsible for designing and building the first large scale sequencing center
in Taiwan with the expertise trained by Dr. Ellson Chen at PE Corp,USA (1997-1998).
Prior to joining Vita Genomics, Dr. Chang was a Research Scientist at a Yale University
spin-out company, Phytoceutica, Inc.(2001-2002).
Dr. Chang received a B.S. in Botany from National Taiwan University and a Ph.D.
in Microbiology and Immunology from National Yang-Ming University, Taiwan.
Post-doctoral training was completed at National Yang-Ming University and Yale University
School of Medicine (Pharmacology).
Lawrence Shih-Hsin Wu, Ph. D., Consultant, Research Development
Dr. Wu received a B. S. in Biology from Tunghai University, M. S. in Botany
and Ph.D. in Agricultural Biotechnology from National Chunghsing University.
Postdoctoral training was completed at National Health Research Institute.
In year 2001, Dr. Wu decided to change track to a more applicable and challenging
industrial research organization and became one of scientists in the R&D division
at Vita Genomics, Inc.
